For the past few years, my daughters have asked me to take them strawberry picking, but somehow I have managed to miss strawberry season every year. This year I was determined to make their wish come true! I looked it up and found out that the prime dates for strawberries are from April to July. Unexpectedly, the pandemic started in mid-March and I thought we would have to miss it again this year. To my excitement, I recently found out that Carlsbad Strawberry Company is now open and we were hosted as a family to experience a strawberry picking day. We heard great things about this strawberry field and have always wanted to visit.
Our family absolutely loved our first strawberry picking experience at Carlsbad Strawberry Company. We went on a Monday morning, and it was not crowded at all. Everyone on the field was required to wear a mask at all times and there was plenty of space for social distancing. It has a beautiful large field that goes on and on, and at one end of the field you can even see a view of a lake.
The quality of the strawberries were great. There were many gorgeous, red strawberries of all sizes to pick that are delicious. Every row of the field was so packed with fruits that you don’t have to walk very far to fill up your bucket. This was such a memorable family experience that we’ll never forget. We all had so much fun that we decided to make strawberry picking an annual family tradition!
Here’s a few things you need to know to prepare yourself for U-Pick strawberry at Carlsbad Strawberry Company.
Time: The earlier you arrive the less crowded it is. Give yourself one hour to pick strawberries and to take a lot of pictures. It’s open Monday through Sunday 9AM- 6PM.
What to wear: Everyone is required to wear a mask at all time during the Pandemic. In case it’s sunny, you might want to bring hats for your family for a more comfortable experience. You can also expect to step on dirt, light mud and possibly some fallen strawberries on the ground as you’re walking through the field, so wear appropriate covered toe footwear. Leave your nice shoes at home.
What to prep your kids on prior to strawberry picking: It would be a good idea to demonstrate for your kids the right way to pick a strawberry before they do it on their own. Young kids might squash the fruit when they are removing it. If you have toddlers, you might also want to give them the heads up about what they might be stepping on so that it won’t bother them on the field.

What to do after strawberry picking:
There is so much to do around Carlsbad, this is a great place to be. We recommend grabbing a bite at the Carlsbad Premium Outlets since they have so many options for take outs, and then drive out to Oceanside for a walk along the pier area. You can buy a snow cone there right on the sand level (adjacent to the pier) and enjoy sitting at the beach.
