You probably already know that snacks are an essential part of any mom’s life, but did you know that snacks don’t have to be boring? We just tried a monthly subscription box called Universal Yums that sends you snacks from all over the world. It features snacks from different countries every month so that you and your family can sample new tastes from places you dream of traveling to. Imagine having your kids try out what other kids around the world are eating at their snack time. It’s a very interesting idea. Not only are there different flavors, the different snacks gives you a glimpse into the culture and life of that location.
Our family was super excited to receive our first box featuring snacks from the United Kingdom! We’ve never been there and have no idea what the contents might be. When we opened it, it had a map of the United Kingdom showing the different countries and a fun fact about each of them. This was helpful because we were a little fuzzy on all the countries the UK is comprised of. There were also games on the back of the map allowing you to rate the snacks that you received as well as come up with a team rating etc. In addition, there is a booklet that teaches you more about the United Kingdom and goes into detail about each snack, the history and origin behind them, as well as nutrition facts. We enjoyed reading the A day in the life in the United Kingdom section where it taught us about what families there ate for breakfast, what kids wear, their slang words and afternoon games.
I knew eating new snacks would be a hit and something the whole family would enjoy, but I was surprised at how much fun my kids had in talking about each snack and rating their favorites. They read the booklet from cover to cover and initiated their own group discussion and talked about it among themselves. In the days that followed, we gave each other a knowing smile every time the United Kingdom was mentioned on TV or in conversations. The best way to describe it is it feels like we traveled there and feel ownership over what we learned. My advice would be eat these snacks slowly and allow the fun to last as long as you can… until the next box arrives and the fun starts all over again.
To give you an idea of the snacks we received and how different they are from the snacks here in the United States, here’s a list of the contents. It’ll be different every month based on the country you get.
United Kingdom Snacks:
Grandma Wild’s Toffee Flapjacks
Bristow’s Sherbet Lemons
Mackies Honey & Mustard Potato Crisps
Bristow’s Bucks Fizz Chews
Johnny’s Pickled Onion Rings
Dean’s Shortbread Rounds
Yummy Banana Toffee
Clotted Cream Fudge
Welsh Potato Crisps Lamb & Mint
Chewy Bonbons Rhubard & Custard
Kent Crisps Ashmore Cheese & Onion
Bristow’s Chocolate Limes
Isn’t this an interesting list? It’s unique and not like our usual Goldfish and Doritos here in the States. In our family of six we each had our own favorite United Kingdom snack that was different from each other. It was surprising to see what everyone liked and didn’t like. Through these snacks, we learned something about each other’s preferences too and had a wonderful bonding time with the family. If you haven’t yet, we highly recommend trying out a Universal Yums box.
