By Joyce Lee (A digital code was provided for review of the movie, all opinions are my own. Activity sheets are provided by Disney.)
We watched THE CALL OF THE WILD as a family during this quarantine time at home and found it a very touching and heartfelt film. The main character Buck is a brave, loving dog who is a sacrificial leader and a great friend, not only to other animals but to the human masters that have earned his trust. There were some anxious moments in the movie with natural dangers, hostile animals/people, and a bar fight scene, but overall I was very comfortable watching this film with my 6 and 10 year old. There were no romance topics and the language in the movie was clean.
I’ve never read the book so I can’t compare, but this film is well made in the way it develops the the main characters and the scenery of the Canadian Yukon is amazing. We loved the historical glimpse into the lives of those in the Gold Rush during the 1980s.
THE CALL OF THE WILD is now available to buy digitally and on Movies Anywhere in the U.S. for $14.99.
Synopsis + Activity Sheets
Adapted from the novel by Jack London, THE CALL OF THE WILD vividly brings to the screen the story of Buck, a big-hearted dog whose blissful domestic life is turned upside down when he is suddenly uprooted from his California home and transplanted to the exotic wilds of the Canadian Yukon during the Gold Rush of the 1890s. As the newest rookie on a mail delivery dog sled team–and later its leader–Buck experiences the adventure of a lifetime, ultimately finding his true place in the world and becoming his own master. As a live-action/animation hybrid, THE CALL OF THE WILD visual effects and animation technology in order to bring the animals in the film to life.
